
How to Train for Kilimanjaro:
Your 12-Week Training Plan
Start training 12 weeks before your climb! That’s enough time to build your fitness and break in your gear. You are ready for Kilimanjaro if you can hike 5–6 hours over uneven terrain two days in a row without needing a long recovery.
On the climb itself, you will need to hold a steady pace for 6–8 hours a day while your body is still acclimatizing.

Note: if you have been mostly inactive recently, we recommend starting your preparation 4–6 months before the climb.
What training does for you
If you are in strong physical shape and have experience at altitude, preparation can be cut to 6–8 weeks. It is worth being clear about what training actually gives you. Fitness does not protect against acute mountain sickness (AMS) – how your body reacts to altitude does not depend on how fit you are. What lowers AMS risk is acclimatization, which comes down to enough days on the route. Training does a different job: it reduces accumulated fatigue and builds a reserve of strength that raises your chances of reaching the summit.
The training plan
1. Cardio
Developing mitochondrial efficiency and muscle capillarization.
The goal is to teach your body to use oxygen more efficiently. Two processes matter here:

Mitochondria: the "power stations" inside your muscles. The better developed they are, the more energy you draw from fat and the longer you can work without tiring.

Capillarization: the network of fine blood vessels in your muscles. The denser the network, the faster oxygen reaches the muscles and the faster waste products are flushed out.
How to train

Intensity: keep an easy pace – 60–70% of your maximum heart rate.

How to tell: this is "conversational pace." If you can hold a conversation while walking, without shortness of breath, you are in the zone. If your breathing turns heavy, the pace is too high.

Activity: steady, cyclical work – long runs, cycling, or swimming.
The main goal of aerobic training
The aim is to raise your anaerobic threshold. In plain terms, this is the point past which your body starts to "acidify" and tire quickly. Raising this threshold teaches your body to work longer in a comfortable zone, without shifting into heavy breathing or feeling the burn in your muscles.
The result: more endurance – you will run longer and tire less.

2. Strength training
Functional strengthening of the core and supporting muscles.

Type of work: compound, multi-joint exercises (squats, lunges, deadlifts).

Priority: free weights, to engage the stabilizer muscles.

3. Mountain-specific training (Loaded Uphill)
Simulating mountain terrain and loading the musculoskeletal system the way the climb will.

Method: hiking uneven terrain or climbing stairs with a weighted pack.

Progression: build the pack weight gradually to 8–10 kg – deliberately more than the 5–7 kg you will carry on the mountain: train heavier than you will climb.

4. Stretching
Preventing muscle tightness and ligament injuries.

Routine: 10–15 minutes of static stretching at the end of every session.

Sample weekly microcycle
Train 3–4 times a week – no more. Add a long hike every week or two: 3–5 hikes over the whole preparation cycle is enough. At least one day of full rest every week is a must.

How to prepare for altitude if you live at sea level
Sea level cannot fully reproduce high-altitude conditions. The best way to prepare for altitude is to choose a longer route. We recommend 8–9-day programs such as Lemosho or the Northern Circuit. This gives your body time to adapt naturally.

2. Learn to eat on the move: appetite fades at altitude, but calories are vital. Teach your stomach to work under load during your training hikes.

3. Pole pole: on Kilimanjaro we walk slowly (pole pole). Train endurance, not speed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if there is nowhere to train at altitude?
You do not need altitude training: the entire physical base for Kilimanjaro is built at sea level. The job is cardiovascular endurance and strong legs – conversational-pace cardio (running, cycling, swimming) and lower-body strength work (lunges, step-ups). The one thing sea level cannot give you is altitude adaptation, and that is solved by route length, not by training.
Does my pack weight affect my chances of summiting?
Yes. A heavy pack can undermine your comfort on the climb and put your summit at risk. Keep your pack at 5–7 kg so your energy goes into reaching the top.
What is the minimum fitness level needed to climb Kilimanjaro?
If you can comfortably walk for 6–8 hours a day, several days in a row, your fitness may already be sufficient. But keep up a consistent training routine before the climb, and you will have the endurance the summit requires.
How fast should I walk during the climb?
Extremely slowly and evenly – the pace known as pole pole (Swahili for "slowly, slowly"). Walking slowly is the single most important acclimatization strategy: a slow pace keeps your heart rate down and gives your body room to adapt to the thinner air. Move too fast, and you risk running up an oxygen debt and draining yourself before the high camps.
Can I climb Kilimanjaro with no hiking experience?
Yes, you can climb Kilimanjaro without any hiking experience, provided you are healthy and put in the preparation time. Kilimanjaro is a mountain you walk up: it requires no technical climbing skills, no ropes, and no mountaineering background.
