Porter in 2001, co-founder now

Liberaty carried loads on this mountain before he led climbs on it. Today he is a co-founder of ALPO alongside Yevgen Staroselskiy.

“When porters had no voice, we fought for fairness. Dignity and respect are not negotiable. We pay our crew very fairly.”

– Liberaty Victor Mato

How ALPO looks after its crew is set out in our porter welfare policy.

What he actually does on the mountain

Liberaty sets the pace – pole pole, slowly, slowly – and makes the day-to-day calls on the trail. Morning and evening, he and his team check SpO₂ (blood oxygen) and pulse on every climber. The crew is his as well: a permanent team of guides working under contract, and porters he trains himself to become ALPO guides. Every camp is left cleaner than we found it.
