Should I Climb Kilimanjaro?
An Honest Self-Assessment

If you can walk 5-6 hours over uneven terrain and you have no serious medical conditions, Kilimanjaro is within your reach. No technical mountaineering skills, no ropes, no prior experience at altitude: you walk to the top of this mountain. Below is what it actually takes, and the myths that keep people from deciding.

What the climb actually requires

  • Basic endurance. You don’t need to be an athlete – you need the willingness to give 12 weeks to preparation. Our 12-week training plan for Kilimanjaro sets out week by week what that involves.

  • Age 15 and up. There is no upper limit. Clients aged 65 and over have reached the summit with us, and the official age record on the mountain stands at 90. Our reasoning for the 15-year age limit is set out separately.

  • No disqualifying medical conditions. Serious cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions call for a consultation with your doctor before you book; our medical requirements spell out what we need to know.

Three myths that hold people back

“You need mountaineering experience”
No. Kilimanjaro is a trekking peak: no ropes, no crampons, no rock climbing. Time on ordinary hiking trails helps, but it is not a requirement.

“You can’t get up without oxygen”
No. A healthy climber does not need supplemental oxygen; sound acclimatization does the work. We always carry emergency oxygen with the group, but it is there for medical emergencies, not as a way to get up the mountain.

“It’s an easy walk”
Also no. This is a 6–8 day expedition: nights in tents, cold, and an altitude of 5,895 m / 19,341 ft. Kilimanjaro is accessible, but it demands respect.

How to tell whether you are ready

An honest benchmark: you can cover 5–6 hours on uneven ground, and repeat it the next day. Our groups have a 95–97% success rate on the Machame Route, and that comes from how our climbers prepare and how we handle acclimatization, not from luck. If you are unsure about your own case, write to us. We will tell you honestly what is realistic for you, and help you work out which route fits.
